Six Degrees of U2
Six degrees of separation is the hypothesis that anyone on Earth can be connected to any other person on the planet through a chain of acquaintances with no more than five intermediaries.
With that in mind, let me tell you my experience of only three degrees of separation.
We stayed this past week for two nights at a lovely Bed and Breakfast in Ayrshire, Scotland. The proprietor, Nick, told us the following story:
About three weeks ago, a woman made a reservation for herself and her husband plus her brother and his wife. They were attending a family wedding in the area. They arrived at the B&B in a very expensive 6-series BMW- chock full of the latest and greatest. During their stay, Nick, (the proprietor), noticed that the trash in the brother's room was always chock full of financial newspapers. When they were checking out, the man asked which credit card Nick would accept and proceeded to pull several of them out. The one he decided to use was from the Bank of Dublin. Nick commented on it and the fact that he had noticed all the financial papers in the trash and asked him if his job involved high finance. Then the man said he was interested in the financial field, but that it was more of a hobby and not his primary job. Nick jokingly asked him about his day job, to which the man replied that he was in the music industry.
"Classical, rock, pop?" Nick inquired.
"Pop," the man replied. "I manage a band."
Nick asked if it was anyone that he would be familiar with, and the man replied that the group was... U2!
Nick did not tell us the guy's full name, only called him Trevor, which means he was likely referring to Trevor Bowen, who is one of the directors of "Principle Management", the management company that U2's manager Paul McGuinness started in 1984. SOOOOOOOOO! If you consider the theory of six degrees of separation, I know Bono and the boys through only three degrees of separation!
LOL Anyway, I thought that was a pretty cool story.
